18 JULY 2019

Dear All

Another great sing last night and particularly nice to have Sacha Langton-Gilks with us to share in the teaching of two of the songs. Much appreciated – thankyou Sacha.   Congratulations to those choir members who sang at the Primary School last Saturday.  We sounded good and our efforts were really valued.  The picnic and Ninebarrow concert the following day was also a real delight. NInebarrow, as ever, sang extraordinarily beautifully and their support act, guitarist Will McNicol, was quite something.  Special thanks to Linda (soprano) for organizing such beautiful weather too.

Our next public performance is not until early September so we will be taking a break from revising our summer song set for a few weeks and concentrating instead on learning a few news ones and revisiting some old favourites.  Next week we are planning to sing Vive la Musica, Walk a Mile in My Shoes, Plovi Barko, Riverside, Hippopotamus Song, In My Life, I Will Follow Him, Jesu Ukukhanya

Looking ahead there will be NO CHOIR ON WEDNESDAY 28th AUGUST.  I think this is possibly the first time in almost ten years that we have taken a break other than at Christmas / New Year.  Make the most of it – it’s not likely to happen again.

POSSIBLE CHOIR OUTING

Quentin and Maggie Edwards have offered to show us around their farm in East Knoyle once again, and provide us with another cream tea.  No date has been decided but there seemed to be sufficient interest last night to make the occasion worthwhile.  Watch this space.

Dear All

We have been generously thanked for our performances by the organisers of both the St James’ Festival and Motcombe Fete.  Our concert for the former was a 50/50 split and just over £240 has now been banked by Tracey.  Motcombe Fete made an incredible £10,000 and the organisers there have offered to make a donation towards our running costs or, if we prefer, something more specific.  Next week we will be brushing up songs from our summer “pad” in readiness for Gold Hill Fair and, if time, continuing learning Riverside and In My Life.

SPRINGHEAD PICNIC - Sunday 14 July

If enough of us wanted to go, we thought it would be a good idea to turn Ninebarrow’s concert at Springhead into a choir picnic. It’s a public event of course but, weather permitting, there will be ample room for us to stake a pitch in the grounds and generally share hospitality. I will take orders next week but Linda (soprano) has tickets and will have them the week after if you’d like to buy them directly from her.   For more information generally please see  https://www.springheadtrust.org.uk/events/

MUSICAL WALK IN THE PURBECKS

I have written to Ninebarrow and hope to be able to report back next week.  The following ideas were to put to them:

Timing: mid or late summer; weekend preferred

Duration: involving lunch and tea OR tea and supper

Length: up to about 4 miles but allowing for those less mobile to join us at key points for the food and singing - probably two or three stops with a short informal sing around and perhaps a final sing at a pub / cafe.  (NB:  Ninebarrow will be performing at Springhead, Fontmell Magna on Sunday 14 July.)

THE IMPORTANCE OF AN ENTHUSIASTIC AUDIENCE

We only have to look back to last weekend and the choir’s performance in the Abbey Gardens to realise how lovely it is to perform to a large and enthusiastic audience.  I am attaching Andrea (alto)’s poster for our forthcoming concert at St James.  Please print it off, display it somewhere prominent if you can and encourage all your friends and family to come along.  It would be great to play to a packed audience.  And talking of audiences, I have recently been sent this link to the last moments of a concert given by the Boston Symphony Orchestra.  It’s only short – make sure you turn the volume up.  https://www.wgbh.org/news/local-news/2019/05/09/the-kid-who-put-everybody-in-stitches-at-boston-symphony-hall-has-been-found

9 MAY 2019

Dear All

A really good sing last night – and a very encouraging last rehearsal for our performance at the Food Festival this weekend (see full details below). Please do tell everyone you can about this – it would be lovely to sing in front of a vast crowd of friends and supporters.  Yuko (soprano) has found this performance of a rather different version of “Leko Hode Nedo”: https://youtu.be/IkPQq9zknRI.  Apparently it is nothing at all to do with an obstinate donkey but rather about a girl who dreams of a fairer complexion!  A proper translation will, we hope, follow in due course

CALLING ALL RECORDER PLAYERS

Yuko (soprano) writes:

'We play the recorders for fun, but there are only three of us at the moment. We have some quartets but as we haven't played them for so long we wondered if some of the community choir member would like to join us. We practise between 2:30 and 4:30pm on Thursdays, fortnightly, at Freda's house. She makes us a lovely cup of tea during tea break. After the gathering, I always feel lifted up like after Wednesday choir practice! Our next practice day is Thursday 14th March. If you used to play the recorder(s) and are interested in joining us, please see Freda or me (sop). Look forward to hearing from you ♪ '

14 FEBRUARY 2019

Dear All,

Happy Valentine’s Day!  Another great sing last night and another great turn-out too. Wonderful.  It was particularly reassuring to see that no-one seemed to have suffered any ill effects from last week’s grilled sausage rolls too.  Next week you are invited to wear something particularly bright and colourful to help keep us in good spirits … not that we actually need anything of course.  Totally non-competitive, it would be lovely to see everyone wearing their glad rags.  Next week we will be singing: Alleluia, Siyahamba, Morning has  come, Funiculi Funicula, Leko hode nedo, Time after Time, Forever Young and Heart to Heart.

TWO NEW ART COURSES & A CALL FOR STORYTELLERS

Julia has drawn our attention to two new art courses being held locally: Art and Mindfulness, to be held on Wednesday mornings in March at Gold Hill Museum, and the Art of Landscape Painting to be held on Thursday evenings in March at Riversmeet, Gillingham.  See attached flyers.  “Read Easy” is also calling for storytellers to read out loud in four of our local supermarkets over the coming months in order to raise public awareness and funds for reading books and other resources.

31 JANUARY 2019

Dear All,

Not much to report except to say that last night’s singing was great (of course) and to remind you that next week will be a BADGE WEDNESDAY.  Please come sporting a name badge.  Don’t worry if you forget though – Julia will have some sticky labels.  As it will be the start of the Chinese New Year we will be singing May Your Cup Always Be Full and The Boar’s Head Carol (it is going to be Year of the Pig after all and I think it is probably the only pig song in our repertoire), our own bespoke version of Vive La Compagnie, continuing work on Isn’t She Lovely and Time After Time, and, time permitting, singing Bela Mama, Give Me Wings and the Ghanaian Kyrie as well.

3 JANUARY 2019

Dear All,

Happy New Year.  Thanks to all for making last night’s party such a success and getting 2019 off to such a good start.  A particular thankyou to Elizabeth, Jerome, Mary, Janet, Sue, Dudley, Tony, the two Richards, Karen, Steve, Margaret, Freda, Tess, Yuko and Katy for their cabaret turns of course, and to Robin for some invaluable last minute depping on guitar.

Our carol singing just before Christmas raised £114 for research into Parkinson’s Disease, so well worthwhile.  There is an excellent video clip of this on our website, so do take a look.  Talking of which, Andrea will be uploading some pictures from last night’s party over the next few days together with the recording we made last month of “Come Descend” which, incidentally, was really liked by Nym Cooke who arranged it and provided the English words.  (If we sound a bit beery, blame it on my digital recorder and the acoustics of the Town Hall!)

Next week we will be singing the Argentine Carol and We Wish You Joy once more together with the Boars Head Carol, Lullay My Liking, Gloucestershire Wassail and rounding things off with Senzeni Na.  A heady mix.

COMING CHOIR EVENTS

Friday 7 June  Concert at St James Church.

Saturday 15 June  Motcombe Village Fete
