Every Wednesday evening from 7.30 pm to 9.00 pm throughout the year about 70 people make their way to Shaftesbury Town Hall, often feeling weary from the labours of the day but emerging energised and relaxed. As someone once wrote about their membership of a community choir “ I become temporarily suspended in a world where everything bad is bearable, and everything good feels possible.”
We sing a great range of music from 60's pop to gospel and Croatian lullabies to Rachmaninov vespers. We sometimes sing specially composed songs by one of our choir leaders. or versions arranged by one of our members. The choir is led by two well liked local musicians, David Grierson, musical director and accompanist, and Karen Wimhurst, composer and jazz clarinettist .
There’s plenty of evidence that singing is great for your mental well being. Being part of a group, creating a powerful swell of sound, trying out all sorts of different types of music, making new friends and just switching off at the end of a busy day, what’s not to enjoy?
